Watering for soil types

Sandy Soil

Drains quickly and doesn’t hold moisture well.

Watering recommendation:

More frequently, but shorter durations

Example: 10–15 mins, 3–4 times a week

Clay Soil

Holds water longer, but drains slowly (can lead to runoff if overwatered).

Watering recommendation:

Less often, but longer durations

Example: 20–30 mins, 1–2 times a week

Water in shorter cycles (e.g., 10 mins on, rest for 30 mins, then 10 more) to allow absorption and prevent runoff

Loamy Soil (the dream soil!)

A balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay — retains moisture well and drains decently.

Watering recommendation:

Moderate frequency and duration

Example: 15–20 mins, 2–3 times a week

Not sure what soil you have?
Try the squeeze test:

Grab a handful of damp soil.

If it falls apart easily, it’s sandy.

If it clumps tightly, it’s clay.

If it holds its shape but crumbles easily, it’s likely loam.
